BAERS
We just got back from the doctor’s office where Isaac had his BAERS test done. He did excellently. They were prepared for him with the pulse oximeter and heart rate monitor, and because our technician was a little on the paranoid side, the “crash cart” at the ready.
The sedative dosage for this test was different from the MRI. It only has one drug in it instead of 2, and she gave him an infant dose (about 1/2 of a typical toddler dose). He went to sleep beautifully (it happens when you’ve stolen 5 hours of sleep from him, not fed him, and it’s nap time!) and quickly. He did not have any significant episodes of apnea, probably because he had stimulation through most of the test.
Once he was asleep, she put 4 electrodes on his head and a set of headphones over his ears. Then she ran sound through the headphones and monitored the sending and receiving of signals along the “hearing pathway” to check for any misfires. While this will not give us any concrete information about his apnea, it will provide some clues as to whether or not there might be other areas of the brain that are misfiring.
He is doing great! He is awake and playing with trains. In fact, he just found a picture of a train in his book, found all the letters that spell train, and put them in the back of his Little Tikes train. I think he’ll be just fine. We’ll keep a little closer eye than normal on him when he sleeps, but otherwise, he is good…
Hope everyone is enjoying the beautiful spring day (holding a little promise of thunderstorm here)! I will get his 2 year birthday picture posted soon!
