Who is UCA?

Green Development Resources

Urban Catalyst Associates (UCA) has its roots in the master's project planning course in the School of Natural Resources & Environment at the University of Michigan. In the spring of 2004, the team came together to tackle urban redevelopment issues at the neighborhood scale.

Through the evolution of the project, the primary focus became the creation of a case study handbook to "tell the story" of sustainable, green development in the state of Michigan. This handbook was completed in May 2005 and has been disseminated widely throughout the development community in Michigan and beyond.

Urban Catalyst News

10 October 2005 - Aaron and Allyson are in Fort Lauderdale, receiving our ASLA Award! We're also preparing for a presentation next week at the Motherhouse in Monroe, Michigan.

27 June 2005 - Exciting developments in UCA-land! We just received notification that we have been awarded one of three Awards of Excellence by ASLA (the American Society of Landscape Architects). Not only did we win our category, communications, but we were recognized among all types of student projects from this past year. Yeah! No money with this award, but we get to fly to Ft. Lauderdale in November to claim our prize.

In news closer to home, the website is finally updated and the handbooks have been in for almost two weeks now. We had a mailing party last Wednesday and the first shipments went out in the mail Thursday morning. If you've requested a book and haven't received it by the 1st of July, let us know - uca@uca-michigan.com. Next on the list of things to do: lower-res, print-friendly PDF versions of the handbook, and perhaps some individual case PDFs as well.

10 June 2005 - Well, it's old news now, but we didn't win anything at the EPA P3 'science fair' in DC back in May. But we didn't want to win anyhow -- what would we do with $75,000? -- so it ended up being a success, in a backwards sort of way. A pleasant junket business trip all in all.

The handbooks are (finally) printed and being bound as we speak. Delivery is scheduled for Monday or Tuesday... which could mean next Friday by the way things are going. The big (30.5 MB) PDF is online though - hurrah! Look in the Publications section of our site. We expect to have alternate versions available for download sometime soon... And CDs at some point...

If you are interested in receiving a printed (or CD, when it's available) copy of the handbook, please let us know via e-mail: uca@uca-michigan.com
